Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea at the Westin Hotel Sydney

This post is an another example of how far behind I am with my posts. Back in August it was my birthday. In my defence, it was the very end of August. Anyway, to celebrate with a few of my friends from high school, we went to the Mad Hatter’s High Tea at the Westin Hotel.

The Mad Hatter’s High Tea takes place in the Lobby Bar Lounge and Room, inside the stunning Westin Hotel in the Sydney CBD and “under the clock chime”.

There are three different options:

1. A Mad Tea Party ($45.00), which comes with “bottomless cups of tea and coffee”;

2. Down the Rabbit Hole ($55.00), which comes with a SuperFoodsRX cocktail; or

3. Ruinart’s Queen of Hearts ($65.00), which comes with a flute of R de Ruinart Champagne.

We opted for the Mad Tea Party option.

It felt very Sex and the City, the four of us sitting in the lounge of a nice hotel with coffee. If it was really Sex and the City it would have been cocktails, I know, but at this particular point in time (midday on a Sunday), the unlimited tea and coffee option was more appealing.

It didn’t take long for our food to arrive and boy were we in for an Alice in Wonderland themed treat.

The savoury plate consisted of “Tweedlede & Tweedledum” – roasted beef and fresh asparagus roulade on mini laugen; “Caterpillar” – cherry bocconcini & tomato on fresh green salad boat; and “Alice in Wonderland” – Alaskan crabmeat salad on double bread wrapped in cucumber.

I have not one single complaint about any of this – it was all delicious. Everything was fresh, perfectly presented and the flavour combos were spot on.

We finished the savoury tier before we moved onto the top tier, which was filled with themed sweet treats.

There was: The Mad Hatter’s Hat – rich dark chocolate mud cake encased in chocolate icing; The White Rabbit’s Pocket Watch – purple macaroon with a blueberry cream filling; and The Queen of Hearts – layers of raspberry buttercream, chocolate ganache and raspberry jelly.

It was pretty difficult to choose a favourite – they were all so sweet and delicious and the presentation made them even more special. I’m a sucker for a theme.

And, of course, the feast didn’t end there. We still scones with jam and cream to go. It wouldn’t have been high tea without scones, so I was pleased to see the waitress bring them over once we’d finished off both tiers of our high tea. These scones were super tasty and not too big which was good after all the food we’d already eaten. They were served with homemade strawberry jam, raspberry chocolate jam and clotted cream.

The Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday with some of my oldest friends. I definitely recommend the experience for a girly get-together.

Would I go again? When I’ve completely recovered from my sugar coma.
